Degradation of High-Voltage Cathodes

Operando Raman Spectroscopy Measurements of a High-Voltage Cathode Material for Lithium

Philipp Jehnichen, Klaus Wedlich, Carsten Korte, 2019

High-voltage cathodes are a promising technology for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, they suffer from degradation during cycling, which limits their lifespan. In this paper, we present operando Raman spectroscopy measurements of a high-voltage cathode material for lithium called LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2. We show that the material undergoes several structural changes during cycling, which are accompanied by changes in the Raman spectrum. These changes can be used to track the degradation of the material and to identify the mechanisms responsible for it.

Our results provide new insights into the degradation of high-voltage cathodes and could help to improve their performance and lifespan.
